Who we are
Background to Khazimla Project NPC
According to a national survey and studies by Statistics South Africa, at least 60% of South African girls and women cannot afford to purchase any form of sanitary protection. Therefore, as a result, young girls may lose up to 50 days of schooling per year, in an already pressurized education system. It is understood that these young girls wear anything at hand, for sanitary protection (e.g. leaves, newspaper, bark of trees, fabric). Consequently, lack of proper sanitation and running water combined with the unhygienic containment methods often create the perfect environment for infections to set in and a vicious cycle begins.
Looking to the future
With a view to the future and potential of the young women in our community we launched Khazimla Project with the objective of empowering young women and restoring their dignity. Currently, our primary focus is the provision of sanitary protection to young school-going girls.
We currently distribute over 14,000 sanitary towels per month and support the following less fortunate primary schools in Port Elizabeth and surrounding areas:
- Colchester Primary School (Colchester)
- De Vos Malan Primary School
- Missionvale Primary School
- Sapphire Road Primary School
- Alfonso Arries Primary School
- Seyisi Primary School
- Vusumzi Primary School (Addo)
We currently also provide support to the young girls at the EP Child and Youth Care Centre.
Our target
Grade 6 and 7 learners who do not have any other access to sanitary protection and our aim is to ensure that they have sufficient supplies of sanitary towels so as not to miss any school days.
Our programme has been funded by:
